BS Exposed

The Black Canyon Drinking Mining & Railroad Company is a garden railroad, a G-Scale model railroad located outdoors all year round with 450 feet of track, real rocks and plants, scale trains, buildings, animals & people. It’s a noisy railroad. Locomotives huff & puff, a mine resounds with drilling and explosions, a hotel with music and a bar fight, livestock cars with animal sounds and an engine shed with machinery.

There was never a gold mine in Black Canyon, no Red Rock City, no Last Resort Hotel, no BS Ventures nor a Baron & Baroness Spilsbury, all of which are the product of the vivid imagination of garden railroader, Mick Spilsbury, and which are captured on his garden railroad (with occasional, random references to real people and events in Marin County in the 1890’s).

This is Mick’s second garden railroad. The first was overly complex and a bear to maintain. It was abandoned and its site is now a productive vegetable garden. Mick started construction his new, more straightforward RR in 2015. Mick is currently the President of the 400-member Bay Area Garden Railway Society (not a hard position to get) and Marketing & Distribution Director for the bi-monthly online magazine, ‘Garden Railroading News’ (another role that was not hard to get)

Mick and his beloved and tolerant wife, Liz, celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in 2024.
